Are you looking to run old Java applets but have no clue how to do so? Then this is the guide for you. Please note that this guide is written for Windows users.
Required files
- Internet Explorer 11-this comes pre-packaged on all Windows computers.
If by some tragic mistake you have upgraded to Windows 11 then you can download Internet Explorer 11 through Microsoft's website - Java - You can download it here. While I have found that the 64bit version of Java works fine, some people have reported that the 32bit version works best in Internet Explorer.
Step 1
Make sure you have Java and Internet Explorer 11 installed. Then, open Internet Explorer 11 and go to "Internet Options" and then click on the "Security" tab. Click on the "Custom Level" button and then click enable under the "Scripting of Java applets". Save the changes and restart Internet Explorer 11.
Step 2
Open the Java control panel application (javacpl.exe) and click on the "Security" tab. Make sure that "Enable Java content for browser and Web Start applications" is checked and that the security level is set to "Very High".
Step 3
While you are still in the "Security" tab, click on the "Edit site list" button under the "Exception site list" header. Then, proceed to add the website. I recommend adding the website as "www.example.com" instead of "www.example.com/javaapplet.html" to avoid future hastles. Save the changes and close the Java control panel application.
Step 4
Now, try running your Java applet. You will have some message boxes pop up warning you about security vulnerabilities but feel free to ignore them. If you have followed the instructions carefully your Java applet should work.
Is it really okay to ignore those warning messages?
In my personal opinion, it should be fine if you are running Java applets that are games or simple applications. However, I would not recommend using a Java applet that requires you to input sensitive information such as usernames/passwords or any personal information. Please be responsible and only use Java applets you trust.
Help! My Java applet is still not working!
Make sure you have correctly added the website containing your Java applet to the "Exception site list". Furthermore, try manually disabling and then re-enabling "Scripting of Java applets" in Internet Explorer 11.
I have everything running, what now?
You can use oekaki boards, play games and run various applications. The power is yours.
There are many other ways you can run Java applets but this is the method that has worked best for me. If you have any questions please let me know, otherwise I hope this tutorial has been helpful.
